Research Project 2014/2015

Ginevra Caltagirone Foundation inaugurates 2014 with the publication of scientific results of the Laboratory from 2013 to 1014 and with the renewal of the commitment to support the research promoted by the Veronesi Foundation in the field of pediatric oncology and carried out by Dr. Riccardo Masetti, with a new loan of 48,000 Euro.

We fans immediately to the project Dr. Riccardo Masetti, because it addresses an issue very dear to us, namely the future of pediatric cancer therapies, in a field, that of acute myeloid leukemia, which still lacks protocols targeted for young patients .
The research, originally founded by a grant funded by us through a joint call with the Veronesi Foundation, was so positive that has led us to also finance the next project in which Dr. Masetti and his team work to identify causes of the disease and identify, therefore, of the targeted molecular drugs that are the least invasive as possible on physical of children.

In this project, there are many important issues, since it affects a very particular context in which to date has been very little done just because of lack of funding. The big pharmaceutical companies invest in the search for drugs that can combat widespread diseases of mainly adult populations and, unfortunately, left uncovered areas such as this where the disease is less common and affects children whose care protocols are different from those of Adults (and therefore less common). Precisely for this reason we value the presence of private foundations that can instead intervene with targeted funding in these areas of research.
The project of Dr. Masetti, also is very attractive because it could allow, once identified the causes of the disease and created protocols targeted use of existing drugs to treat children. This means not having to wait a very long time to see the results of his research put into practice.
No coincidence that today Dr. Masetti has had numerous awards at international level with various publications right to make public the extraordinary achievements.

Then we go to remember that a continuation of the bag of medical research funded by the Foundation in 2012-2013 Geneva Caltagirone that allowed the "Sequencing of Pediatric AML", and the science lab funded in 2013-2014 to 50,000 Euros, with whom Dr. Riccardo Masetti was able to continue the project "The Hedgehog signaling pathway as a new therapeutic target in acute myeloid leukemia in pediatric normal karyotype," the new support for the year 2014 which will last until 2105, has as its objective the continuation of 'research and study of Dr. Masetti and his work group with a new and important project: "The evolution of the clonal cell leukemia cases of AML with normal karyotype of childhood through Whole-exome sequencing" and will be carried out at the Policlinico S. Orsola - Malpighi of Bologna.
