Research Grant Ginevra Caltagirone Foundation: the winner

Dr. Riccardo Masetti has been awarded a research grant from Ginevra Caltagirone Foundation non-profit organization to continue his studies on acute myeloid leukemia.

Umberto Veronesi Foundation., in detail the operational headquarters in Rome, with the support of Ginevra Caltagirone Foundation, has awarded 1 scholarship worth 27,000 euros for a period of 12 months, to Dr. Riccardo Masetti, which held his research at the "Policlinico S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital - Department of Pediatric Onco" Lalla Serragnoli" - Bologna University.

The research of Dr. Masetti will focus on acute myeloid leukemia (AML). These represent about 10-20% of cases of acute leukemia of childhood in Italy and the annual incidence is approximately 65-70 new cases per year.

The majority of AML onset is also constituted by the so-called class to "normal karyotype", ie a class in which patients are devoid of chromosomal abnormalities. The project of Dr. Masetti, with the advent of new DNA sequencing techniques, has as its objective the identification of some of the mutations responsible for Chronic myeloid leukemia. This will allow a deeper understanding of the genesis of the disease process, potentially allowing a better classification of patients with normal karyotype AML. Not only that, through these investigations may be possible to tailor treatment regimens to achieve a better recovery post-transplantation and a better quality of life of sick children.
