Finally, this important test for newborns will also be available, free of charge, in a local health center, as opposed to a major hospital.

Currently, there are only some hospitals offering early diagnosis of congenital deafness using the OAE test during the post-natal period, or rather, within the first 5 months of the child's life.

A new project has been launched for "Screening for congenital deafness" at the Colle Massimo Clinic (Largo L. Quaroni 4, health care administration in municipal district XVI). The project, which was made possible through the cooperation of the auditory health unit at G.B. Grassi Hospital, was initiated by "Salute della Donna e del Bambino" (health care unit for women and children) of the "Roma D" local health authority, and is absolutely innovative, in that no other local facilities currently offer completely free services for an exam of this importance. In fact, OAE screening is the most effective way to ensure early diagnosis of congenital deafness.

The decision was brought about by the observations made by pediatricians at clinics run by the local health authority, that many children born in the geographic area of "Roma D", that is to say, most of the infants born in hospitals other than Grassi, were not being screened immediately after birth, since this exam was often only recommended to parents.

Having previously established the service of "Pre-conception Counseling," Salute della Donna e del Bambino has once again proved to be extremely involved in promoting the prevention of diseases and conditions affecting mothers and children in our country.
